SEN YAPI CONSTRUCTION MARKET & BUILDING MATERIALS LIBRARY
The project is located on Istanbul Street that is connected to Ulus, and in front of the Gençlik Park (literally Youth Park), opposite Ataturk Cultural Center area, which is also one of Ankara's major abandoned urban yards. The light steel hangar structure converted into SEN YAPI Construction Market ends with a stunning view of the Ataturk Cultural Center, reaching to Istanbul Street in the south, while in the north housing a double-storey "parasite" home built with bricks laid between wooden beams. This neighborhood, established with one of the most neglected public spaces in Ankara, is an interesting contrast with the irregular "unarchitectured" construction pile in the building’s immediate vicinity that is transformed along with instant necessities.
The main function of the building is to enable the display and promotion of building materials. However, because the exhibited objects are building materials that are hard to store, the product ranges change frequently and the need to promote different product groups lead to an uncontrolled and irregular accumulation. From this point of view, two important factors shaping the design stand out as the limited life spans of the displays and the need for their transformation with user discretion.
The proposed design presents a small scale fairground by completely emptying the floor of the structure. The exhibiting function is met through "pavilions" which can be changed seasonally at the user's disposal.
By this means the usual permanent live exhibition spaces have left their place to variable design possibilities that can be observed from different angles. The variable exhibition area built at the center of the project can also be observed from different elevations through the mezzanine added to the structure. The brick structure that is re-functioned as a guest entertainment area is preserved as a memoir of the surroundings and the past of the area.
The mezzanine creates an alternative venue that will enable long meetings and promotional activities, unlike the exhibition area on the ground floor. This space, housing a printed and digital material library for architects and building sector professionals, sees the exhibition area from a higher elevation on one front while enjoying the view of Ataturk Cultural Center on the other.
The proposed design approach aims to create an alternative to similar uses that rapidly turn into static and uncontrolled warehouse areas. The maintenance and continuity of the design language, as well as the opportunity of the user to convert the designed pavilions within the eight months during which the store is in use, have enabled the project to be observed as an experiment focused on functional sustainability.
